An Introduction by Paul Lever

paul_lever_homeCoaching and Mentoring have been to the forefront of Marylebone Associates’ activities since I founded the consultancy in 2010. This original focus primarily reflected my experience within both the private and public sectors which, to my surprise, displayed a common disinclination to acknowledge the importance of Coaching and Mentoring. Not only was Coaching and Mentoring not taken sufficiently seriously but the provision of such services, where applicable, was largely entrusted to academically oriented organisations rather than professional individuals with a solid grounding in business and management skills. Suffice to say that Marylebone Associates’ constitution and partnership ethos prioritised the substitution of the ‘professional’ for the ‘academic’.

In essence our COACHING AND MENTORING practice provides an internal and confidential service that endeavours to eliminate or mitigate particular risks to the organisation and works towards the transformation of potential misjudgements by an individual into beneficial management decisions. At the risk of stating the obvious, a sympathetic understanding of the pressures faced by managers is integral to such an exercise and can only be appreciated by a mentor who is familiar with the relevant process. As we all know, the principal asset of any organisation is its people, but that said, success through people can only be achieved if we understand and support those we employ.

One of the most difficult tasks within any enterprise lies in the selection of people. Getting this wrong is both expensive and disruptive. In recognition of such dynamics Marylebone Associates operates an EXECUTIVE SEARCH business – Marylebone Executive Search – led by Richard Evans, whose career spans the private, public and charity sectors. Richard’s speciality is the not-for-profit sector. He, in turn, is supported by Tony Rayne, who is responsible for Finance, IT and Administration within the division.

A separate search activity, focused on the private sector, is led by Janice Riches who operates under her own business signature, Riches Consulting. Janice is also an Associate of our Coaching and Mentoring practice, which is headed up by myself.

We also offer a specialist service focused on RISK AND INTEGRITY. The age old definition of an entrepreneur as someone who risks capital has long since given way to a business environment characterised by a plethora of new risks applicable to entrepreneurs and established businesses alike. Risk, in particular cyber, digital crime, money laundering and data protection, represents a constant threat to business and, against this background, we launched Marylebone Risk which encompasses Boardroom and Executive integrity. Marylebone Risk and Integrity is led by Trevor Pearce, the former Director General of both the National Crime Squad (NCS) and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), as Chief Executive of this division. Trevor is ably supported in this role by former colleagues from SOCA. In a related field, we have also launched the MARYLEBONE RISK AND CYBERSECURITY FORUM to provide support to Executives in managing the growing challenges in these areas.

The most recent addition to our services is the MARYLEBONE LANGUAGE SCHOOL, with the launch of our first location in Tuscany where we offer bespoke business Italian courses and team building retreats. We created this service because we know that effective communication is the key to successful business relationships across all languages and cultures.
