During a thirty year career at Barclays Bank, John became a Fellow and Treasurer of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
John spent thirty years at Barclays Bank, having joined as a graduate trainee with a degree in Modern Languages. His last job in Barclays was HR Director for the UK Banking Division, within which some 60,000 people were employed.
During his career at Barclays, he was a Local Director in Essex where he was responsible for all aspects of the management of some 60 branches and he then moved into Human Resources. He ran the Bank’s graduate recruitment programme and managed the careers of the Bank’s high potential cadre, guiding and mentoring some of those who reached very senior positions in the banking and finance sector. He also chaired an international banking training organisation based at Bad Homburg, Germany.
Since leaving Barclays in 1997, John has chaired the Civil Service Appeal Board, which hears appeals against dismissal from civil servants working in Government Departments and Agencies and he undertakes training within Government Departments for those involved in managing disciplinary and inefficiency procedures.
He spent six years as a member of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body, which makes recommendations to the Prime Minister on pay for the Armed Services and is now a member of the Prison Service Pay Review Body. He is the Chairman of Governors of Felsted School, a large independent boarding/ day school in East Anglia.
His experience spans the private, public and voluntary sectors.
