Julian has held executive leadership positions in both publicly listed and private equity owned businesses. He has established and operated businesses in the financial technology, government services, payment services and gaming sectors across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Julian began his career at De La Rue plc, the banknote and security printer, as a graduate trainee. As Sales and Marketing Director of the Government Identification Division he was responsible for the development and sale of new digital and biometric technologies to national identity and passport authorities and oversaw the acquisitions strategy in support of new market entries. In 1998 he led the negotiations on behalf of De La Rue’s Cards Division with the Chinese Authorities in respect of a joint venture to manufacture SIM cards in Guangdong. As Managing Director of the Transaction Services Division he restructured De La Rue’s payments business into a private payment network operator serving the mobile telecoms, utilities and government sectors.
In 2003 he joined Alphyra plc as Managing Director Emerging Markets, leading the international expansion of the business and, together with six other Directors, undertook a successful MBO of the group in conjunction with Benchmark Capital. He established and developed new payment businesses in Europe, the Middle East and the Caribbean through greenfield start-ups and acquisitions.
In 2007 Julian was appointed Managing Director Europe with Payzone Group, the retail payment and ATM operator, where he was responsible for business in Sweden, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Romania and Greece, serving 13 European markets. He undertook a significant restructuring of the businesses and managed the divestment of non-core assets to help maintain the viability of the Group during the difficult trading conditions brought about by the recession.
In 2011 he joined Camelot, the National Lottery operator that had recently been acquired by the private equity arm of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. As Director International Business Development he oversaw their international expansion strategy focused on the acquisition of national lottery licences and long-term operator and payment services contracts within EMEA.
